Liposuction is the removal of unwanted body fat by suction using a surgical vacuum. It is a cosmetic procedure and is carried out to improve a person’s appearance. It is performed with an objective of slimming and smoothing the contours of abdomen, hips, calves, thighs, arms, back, neck or face. A liposuction procedure may include more than one site like abdomen, back and thighs all on the same day.

Most commonly used for cosmetic body shaping, this procedure is also used to reduce the breast size in men having large breasts (gynecomastia) or to remove fat tumors (lipomas).

Benefits of Liposuction

  • Fat and cellulite removal
  • Improved appearance
  • Self-esteem
  • Overall confidence

You are a good candidate for liposuction if you have:

  • Normal weight
  • Healthy and elastic skin
  • Specific troubled areas such as tummy, butt and thighs that will not respond to changes in diet and exercise.

How much time will recovery take?

The time required to perform liposuction may vary considerably, depending on the size of the area, the amount of fat being removed, the type of anesthesia and the technique used. Though the recovery happens quickly and you can return to normal activities within two weeks. However, you can expect soreness, swelling and bruising for atleast few weeks. To control swelling and to help the skin better fit its new contours, patient may be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. You should start with walking and routine light activities after 1 day, strenuous activities after 6 weeks.

What should be your expectations of Liposuction?

You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body soon after surgery. However, drastic improvement will be apparent after four to six weeks when most of the swelling has subsided. After three months, any persistent mild swelling will disappear and final contour will be visible. Please avoid consuming Aspirin and Vitamin E containing medications at least 7days prior to your surgery.  In case you are considering liposuction, it is important that you have realistic expectations. Though dramatic results can be achieved but they may not be as immediate or obvious as you would be expecting. With all plastic surgeries, the success of liposuction will depend on individual factors such as skin, age, weight, elasticity and overall health.
