Ayurveda is based on a belief that health and wellness are closely associated with the mind, body and spirit. According to Dr. Deepika Gunawant, Ayurveda is a system of Indian medicine that is useful for tackling health and wellness related issues in a comprehensive manner, considering the personality traits of an individual. It is one of the oldest holistic whole-body healing systems, which was developed 1,000 years ago in India.  The primary focus of Ayurvedic medicine is to promote good health and fight diseases. However, treatment is recommended for specific health problems only.

Though great advancements have been made in modern medicines, despite that a large number of diseases are still left untreated. This is primarily because for several chronic and metabolic diseases the cause of illness is not clear. The growing levels of stress and anxiety are inducing debilitating conditions like infertility, hypertension, depression, aging, thereby reducing the quality of life.  Therefore, the holy trinity of good health depends on the balance and interaction of three Doshas or humors-Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in our body.

You must know that our personality traits are a blend of these humors with one or more predominating each other. But there is discrepancy which states that three humors are responsible for imbalance in health and causation of illness. The Ayurveda treatment is planned for restoring the disturbed mechanism.

Ayurveda’s thrust is to offer a holistic and natural self care through proper diet, meditation/yoga, exercise, psycho-spiritual counseling, external therapies and medicines including herbs to balance the Doshas or humors on a physical and mental plane. Wellness includes all the dimensions that are inextricably woven in the concepts of Ayurveda.

For an initial treatment, it is important to have a consultation lasting 30-40 minutes for understanding the patients’ personality type, having an account of personal and family history, physical examination, pulse reading, understanding lifestyle and dietary habits as well as the emotional state of an individual.
