A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope (lens capsule), varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. Early in the development, the power of the lens may be increased, causing near-sightedness (myopia), and the gradual yellowing and opacification of the lens may reduce the perception of blue colors. It typically progresses slowly to cause vision loss, and are potentially blinding if untreated.

There are both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. Non-surgical treatment is administered with the help of eye drops that are said to control the clouding. Whereas for surgical treatment, below are the options:

  • Phacoemulsification & foldable lens implantation surgery under eye drops anaesthesia
    • no injection; no stitch; no bandage surgery
    • virtually painless
    • rapid recovery
  • Bi-manual micro-incision phacoemulsification (phakonit)
  • Refractive cataract surgery
  • Small incision cataract surgery (SICS)
  • Paediatric cataract surgery
