Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment median neuropathy, causing paresthesia, pain, numbness, and other symptoms in the distribution of the median nerve due to its compression at the wrist in the carpal tunnel. It appears to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms usually start gradually and include

  • Frequent burning
  • Tingling
  • Itching numbness in the palm of the hand
  • Decreased grip strength

Causes

Its major causes are:

  • Congenital predisposition
  • Trauma or injury to the wrist
  • Cyst or tumor in the canal
  • Diabetes
