Q1. Who is a suitable candidate for implants?

Those individuals who have lost their back teeth making it impossible to construct a conventional dental bridge.
Those who cannot tolerate a denture in their mouth.
Age in itself is not a factor in the choice of treatment, as general health and attitude are much more important in the decision to use dental implants.
There must be enough space to accommodate the prosthesis over the implants.
Your jaw must have enough bones to support the implant (if not bone grafting may be required).

Q2. How long does can an oral implant last?

The various factors involved are:-

High standard of treatment
Meticulous cleaning by the patient on a daily basis
Regular professional cleaning
Avoidance of overloading (chewing bones/hard nuts) can contribute to the durability of the implant

Q3. Is the implant placement painful and how safe is it?

The implant placement usually takes 45-60 minutes depending on the location and number of implants. It is usually done under local anesthesia and is not painful. Post placement your dentist may prescribe medication to alleviate any pain you may have.

Whereas no medical treatment can be guaranteed 100% without risks and failures, implant operation is considered to be very safe. The prosthetic phase of treatment is basically non-invasive and non-surgical in nature.

So in summary dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that can protect the health of your teeth, by simulating your natural tooth and tooth root structure.

Q1. How long will a smile make over take?

Answer. This will depend on your personal goals and on what final results you'd like to see. Some smile makeovers may consist of as few as one or two short procedures, such as dental bonding and teeth whitening; whereas others may require more extensive work, including porcelain veneers, dental implants, and other, more time consuming procedures.

Q2. What are the advantages of a complete smile makeover?

Answer. The most obvious advantage of having a full smile makeover is that you end up with the smile you've always wanted - the color, the structure, and the function of strong, healthy, bright and beautiful teeth.

Another advantage is that in some cases, cosmetic dental procedures may be redundant or may actually require more time and expense when done separately; so addressing your cosmetic dentistry needs as a whole can save you time and money in the long run.

Q3. How long will my new smile last?

Answer. Today's materials, such as veneers, are actually stronger than natural teeth, and are far more resistant to wearing and breakage than your natural teeth. With regular checkups and care, your smile should last for many years.

Q4. How quickly will I be able to complete my treatment?

Answer. Most extreme smile makeovers can be completed in as little as one to three visits (but may vary depending on the complexity of each case).

For example, a smile makeover often involves placing veneers or crowns on the top eight to ten teeth. In the first sitting, you and the doctor would discuss how you want your smile to look like. Answer. Anyone is a good candidate for a smile makeover, if you do not feel confident in the way your teeth or smile looks because of a chip on a tooth, crowding, misalignment, or staining.

Q7. What causes the discoloration of a tooth?

Answer. Tooth discoloration is a normal part of aging. As people age, the enamel wears down, and teeth take on a duller appearance. Teeth can also become discolored from smoking and heavy consumption of coffee or tea. Other causes of tooth discoloration include side effects of medications (specifically certain antibiotics) used during the developmental phase of the teeth, an individual's genetic makeup, and excessive fluoride consumption (fluorosis, seen in both children and adults). Teeth whitening and veneers offer a cosmetic dentistry solution for people with discolored or dull-looking teeth.

Q8. Are there any side effects associated with teeth whitening?

Answer. Dentists take protective measures to prevent discomfort during teeth whitening procedures. Typically, a protective gel or rubber shield is used to prevent bleaching agents from damaging gum tissue. The most common bleaching agents used by dentists are approved for use by the American Dental Association, ensuring safety and effectiveness. After the whitening procedure, you may experience minimal tooth sensitivity for a short period of time.

Q9. Does a tooth whitening procedure work for everyone?

Answer. No, in cases involving severe discoloration, teeth whitening may not result in a bright, white smile. Individuals with severe tooth discoloration should consider other options, such as porcelain veneers or composite bonding.

Q10. Are there special considerations for dental veneers?

Answer. The factors to consider when evaluating a veneer procedure from an aesthetic point of view include:

The color of your teeth. For example, most veneers are ultra-thin and therefore translucent, so discolored teeth underneath may show through. Your dentist may recommend teeth whitening first to reduce discoloration. Veneers are fabricated to have a natural tooth-like appearance. Veneer color must match that of any remaining teeth, and texturing may be applied to veneer surfaces for a natural look.
The impact of your lifestyle and habits. For example, teeth grinding and clenching may make the veneer more susceptible to chips, cracks, and breaking.

Q11. Are veneers my only option if I want a smile makeover?

Answer. No, your cosmetic dentist will determine the cosmetic dentistry procedures that would be the best for you. The dentist's suggestions will be based on your desires and a thorough examination to determine the condition of your teeth and what problems, if any, may require dental treatment. Therefore, your smile makeover could involve teeth whitening, crowns, composite bonding, gingival sculpting, inlays and onlays or any other combination of cosmetic dental procedures that your dentist determines is right for your cosmetic treatment plan.

Q12. What tooth whitening choices are there if I am interested in whitening my teeth?

Answer. There are different ways to whiten your teeth. Two main choices are available, one is chair side bleaching or in-office bleaching and second is home bleaching.

Q13. Is bleaching safe or does it damage the tooth?

Answer. Bleaching is a completely safe procedure. There is no damage done to tooth structure from the bleaching process.

Q14. What are the side effects of tooth whitening?

Answer. Bleaching gel may cause some degree of tooth sensitivity. This sensitivity is caused due to hot/cold fluids and even air can cause discomfort. However this is transient and would dissipate in 24-48 hours.

Q15. How long will it take for the teeth to become their whitest?

Answer. Results may vary. Some teeth whiten dramatically in just a few days. The majority of people's teeth whiten within 2-3 weeks. The more yellow versus gray color you have in your teeth, the better the bleaching result. Grey enamel similar to that of Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining is more difficult to bleach.

Q16. How long the whitening results will last?

Answer. The whitening can last for around 2 years; again the results may vary from patient to patient

Q17. Why it is not recommended to bleach your teeth during pregnancy or nursing?

Answer. No research has been done into bleaching teeth during pregnancy or nursing, so manufacturers for liability reasons recommend not bleaching during pregnancy or nursing.

Q18. Will bleaching gel whiten my veneers, caps (crowns) and bonding?

Answer. All bleaching agents used to whiten teeth will only work on the natural tooth structure. This means that all dental work including but not limited to bonding, veneers, crowns (caps) and bridges will not bleach or whiten. All dental work would need to be replaced to match the newly whitened teeth.

Q19. How long I should refrain from coffee and red wine after bleaching?

Answer. It is recommended to avoid such beverages during whitening and for 1 week after tooth bleaching.

Q20. Will teeth whiten to the same degree on everyone?

Answer. No. Results vary. Some teeth whiten dramatically in just a few days, while others may take weeks to months to show a difference, if any. The more yellow versus gray color you have in your teeth, the better the bleaching result. Grey enamel similar to that of Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining is more difficult to bleach.

Q21. The area of the teeth near the gums is still not as white as the rest of the tooth?

Answer. Make sure that while using home bleaching, bleach covers the entire surface of the tooth and not just the bottom half. The average tooth will usually have a seamless whitening transition from whiter at the bottom of the tooth (biting surface) to less white towards the gum line. This is normal and an expected result. This is due to thinner enamel in this area allowing more show through the tooth color. Very few cases have total uniform whiteness. With grayish teeth, the transition is somewhat more noticeable. One might see a demarcation area/line between the 2 areas. Keep in mind that whitening fades and the tooth will in most instances gradually blend. In some cases that are extremely resistant to bleaching, one might consider bonding or veneers as an alternative treatment.

Q22. My kids have white "spotty" teeth. Will whitening be of help?

Answer. White spots commonly come from too much fluoride during tooth development. This condition is known as Fluorosis. Although it might look imperfect, these teeth are extremely resistant to cavities. White spots can also occur after orthodontic treatment in the area of orthodontic brackets. This is decalcification, as a result of inadequate hygiene and in these situations these areas are more susceptible to cavities.

There has been no research conducted on bleaching and kids. There have been a few cases reported in the literature with no adverse effects besides temporary tooth sensitivity. We recommend waiting until all the teeth have fully erupted; otherwise the un-erupted tooth portion will not be bleached properly. Bleaching is not advised for individuals below 18 years of age.

Q23. What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?

Ans. Porcelain is a very smooth material that resists permanent staining. Porcelain veneers do not stain when they are exposed to coffee, cigarettes, tea and wine. With diligent brushing, stains and plaque will not build up on the porcelain surface.

Porcelain veneers have the appearance of real teeth. A tooth is naturally translucent. Porcelain veneers are made of porcelain and will give you the appearance of a natural smile.

Q24. What are the benefits of a smile makeover?

Answer. There are health benefits as well as aesthetic ones. The health benefits include less risk of overloaded or worn down teeth, and teeth that are easier to clean and care for.

Teeth that have been straightened, repaired or replaced mean less risk of decay and infections.

Q25. What are the risks of a smile makeover?

Answer. There are no known medical complications with a smile makeover, although no dental procedure is risk-free.

Q26. How long does a smile makeover last for?

Answer. The duration of your smile makeover will extend if you look after your teeth and have regular dental checkups.

You will also require maintenance treatments such as repeat teeth whitening, as your teeth will start to lose brightness over time.

Porcelain veneers can break or fall off and will require replacing.

Composite bonding is prone to staining after a period of time and will need to be enhanced or replaced.

Crowns or bridges will have to be replaced after 10 years or more.
