  Career Counselling Programme
Career is one of the most important aspects of any adult's life The decision for careers in India has to be made pretty early because of the educational structure prevailing in the country. The basis of a career plan is laid as early as the age of 15-16 years when students have to choose between arts, science or commerce discipline or vocational courses.

It is absolutely essential that in order to ensure success, satisfaction and ultimately happiness there be a compatibility with one's own skills, knowledge, personality and interests. We are not always intuitively aware of where our interestslie or which out of an array of career options would be best suited to our needs and desires. Thus one needs to be proactive and also understand the changing nature of jobs and careers which can best be availed through the utilization of career counseling services.

The Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Max Hospital brings forth such a comprehensive service in order to aid individuals in making the best choice for their career. Our servies are geared towards,

Deciding when and who may require the help of a career counselor or who it would benefit the most can be a difficult task. However, if any of the following situations is a prevalent theme then a career counselor may be able to help the concerned individual.
There are many options but no clear direction or sense about what one wants to pursue.
One fell into the job rather than choosing the career. Perhaps there never was a definite career plan and came across an opportunity that seemed right at the time. Years later, there may be a realization that you've gone as far as you can in your current position or you're in the wrong profession altogether.
When one feels one is ready for a change, but has no idea how to go about making it happen. One doesn't know how to pursue a new career or what opportunities are available now.
You don't feel like talking about your day at the office once you leave it. You come home from work and can't bring yourself to relive your day by telling your spouse about it.
You constantly find yourself looking for a new job.
You feel trapped in your job by financial or family obligations.
Thus, the primary purpose of career counseling is to help you learn how to explore and investigate potential majors and occupations. Our career counselor would help you organize your thoughts and ideas about majors, careers and occupations by reviewing the results with you and show you how to explore and investigate those majors/occupations that interest you.

  Max Sports Psychology Program
Premise
For any sport enthusiast the most difficult and annoying thing is to watch his team perform below their ability and lose badly. How many times we see fans and sport critics comment on the fact that the sportsmen are not at times mentally strong or their focus and concentration are not hundred percent, and for the Indian cricket team, the fact that they never perform well under pressure.

And whenever the cricket team performs well under their par, the blame game starts, form the coach to the captain, to the selector and so on.

We talk about mental strength, attitude and focus as what are lacking at times but we blame it on other factors.

We say that a certain player is better than another but the latter performance better always in crunch situations only because of his ability to handle stress better.

Its not just being good at what you know and can do what's important is the ability to convert it into a consistent performance, especially under pressure. For that is a successful sportsman.

We believe that its time now to understand that there is a need to have a specialist of the field of mental health and behavioral sciences, a psychiatrist, who can help the team handle these issues that go beyond the cricketing ability and are more of the mind.
Sports psychology
Sports psychology is all about this attitude, preparing the mind of the athlete to perform his best when in the field. The so called 5's of sports psychology are stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit.

A sportsman is very much like a student who wants to study and get maximum marks always but for some reason or another is unable to do so. Whether it is a lapse in focus, or it is the pressure of the test, or the confidence and maybe the optimum effort he puts, all these can make a huge difference in the final result.

Sport psychology is an emerging field in the worlds of psychology and athletics. For many elite-level, professional, recreational, and even youth athletes, successful performances cannot simply be reduced to superior physical performance. Instead, performance in any endeavor is largely contingent upon mental preparation and psychological strength. Just as you prepared for competition by practicing physical skill as well as increasing your strength and endurance, you must also prepare yourself mentally.
Factors that affect performance and the role of a psychiatrist/ clinical psychologist:
Motivation
Motivation is something that causes a person to act. It is ability to focus on a goal, regardless of physical ability. It is willpower. It has two important element: direction and intensity. Direction is the choice of goal and intensity is how energized the individual is towards the goal.
It is very natural to have the motivation of any individual fluctuate. This happens because there is a lot going on in life and at a time one person can lose motivation to perform in a certain aspect as compared to another. And here the psychiatrist has to help the player to maintain his motivation by counseling.
Concentration
It is very important to do regular exercise not just that make you a better player but those techniques that help you maintain your concentration and focus for a long time. The ability to maintain concentration is one of the most important aspects of any field and by behavioral techniques a psychiatrist can help the team a lot.
Handling pressure
There are three key elements to performing under pressure. If you can remain focused, keep your confidence high and stay committed to your plan, you will be successful. One of the most post-mortem findings of a lost match for the team is that they choked at the pressure situation. What is important is to use relaxation techniques, guided imagery and proper counseling methods to help the sportsman handle pressure better. We have stress handling programs for school students and the corporate sector, its time to have them for the cricketer.
Confidence and self-esteem
Confidence is the realistic expectations of success or of achieving one's goal. It's what athletes reasonably hope to do and not what they dream of achieving. Confident athletes are prepared, judge their abilities and have realistic goals. It's an expression of one's perceived self worth. It is generally related to past experiences within and outside of sports. It's the confidence of the player that makes a lot of difference in the field. Confidence, believing in ones own self is very important and by regular sessions with a counselor one can maintain his self-esteem and confidence to ensure that he feels good about his self and believes that he can give his best performance when it is needed.
Interpersonal relations and 'team spirit'
Cricket is a team game. And if one player wants to match the other to feel better, then there is an internal conflict and this tends to hinder with the team togetherness and can affect the overall team performance significantly. Here the role of the team psychiatrist comes into play where he can help bring the people together and get a collective sense of responsibility.
Personal factors
Sportsmen are humans. And humans have personal issues that can really affect their productivity in any and every sphere of their life. This is where a psychiatrist comes into help where he is able to help the individual go through difficult times both personal and professional, in a better and comfortable manner.
Imagery
Imagery is the process by which you can create, modify or strengthen pathways important to the co-ordination of your muscles, by training purely within your mind. Imagination is the driving force of imagery. Mental imagery uses visualizations (picturing images) and other senses for example sounds and smells, to improve performance.
Arousal
arousal is alertness, consciousness, responsiveness, vigilance or wakefulness. It refers not only to psychic energy or mental activation, of a person, but also the physiological and behavioral manifestations for example increased breathing rate or heart rate.
Building Belief Systems in a sportsperson
Building belief in your mental and physical skills is a long term process. This is why there are so many hours of practice. Doing the task over and over again makes it automatic. Physically the player believes she can strike the ball well and put it where she wants it time after time. This is the foundation of high level performance.

Building belief in mental skills is a good example of how one can acquire skills and then lose faith in them when they fail under pressure. Solid belief systems are built as crisis comes to the system and it fails and the athlete must revamp and learn a higher level of mental skill.

Visualization is a good example. Many athletes have tried it but have given it up because their level of expertise failed under pressure and they did not know how to move to the next level. Many people do not want their belief system to be challenged because it raises the potential question about whether they were wrong to believe in the skill or was the skill level not adequate for the situation at hand?

When crisis challenges a belief system, the athlete could ignore the challenge and wonder why the skill doesn't work. Or the athlete could choose to look for a different level of the skill and then take the time to learn this new skill as well. After the new skill has been learned, it too must face challenges in order for the athlete to have confidence and belief in the skill.
The five Cs of success in sports
Concentration - ability to maintain focus
Confidence - believe in one's abilities
Control - ability to maintain emotional control regardless of distraction
Commitment - ability to continue working to agreed goals
Character-to maintain the integrity in adverse times
