Nutrients are the chemical substances supplied by food that the body needs for growth maintenance and repair.

Nutrients can be divided into six groups:
  Carbohydrates
  Protein
  Fats
  Minerals
  Vitamins
  Water

Functions of Nutrients:
Serve as a source of energy or heat.
Support the growth and maintenance of tissue.
Aid in the regulation of basis body processes.

Nutrition and Health:
Good nutrition is essential for good health and important for physical growth and development, good body composition and mental development. People’s nutritional state can protect them from or predispose them toward chronic disease. Medical treatment for many diseases includes diet therapy. Nutrition is thus both a preventive and a therapeutic science.

Diet as Therapy:
A modified diet is often an important component of a person’s total health care. A modified diet is one that has been altered to include more or fewer nutrients, to effect a change in the texture or consistency of what is ingested, or to restrict the intake of any substance. For example, diet is an important part of the treatment for persons with the metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Special dietary measures are often required to maintain the lives of patients who have chronic heart, kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal diseases. These diets must also take into consideration the effects of medications on nutrients. Adjustments in diet are also necessary in other situations, such as after highly stressful or traumatic events, including severe burns, cancer, and surgery.
