How often should I have a mammogram ?
Since we do not have a systematic screening programme in India we follow the recommendations of the American Cancer Society for the moderate and high risk categories of women (Read Leaflet on Risk categories)
Between the ages of 40-49 : You should have a mammogram every 1-2 years, with the first at the age of 40 (baseline mammogram).
50 years - annual mammogram
Timing of mammogram - one week after the periods |

Is mammogram painful? |
Some compression of breast tissue is required for adequate mammography. This allows better pictures to be taken and allows lower doses of radiation. There might be some slight discomfort for a few seconds. If the mammogram is done in the week after your periods, your breasts are likely to be less tender. |

Is the level of radiation dangerous? |
No. Radiation from a mammogram is less than the radiation you would receive if you sat on a beach for a day. |
