We spend most of our time sitting behind a desk. Hence, it is of utmost importance that we improve our posture. A bad posture can irreparably damage our back over time. Dr. Suruchi Malhotra, Consultant, Physiotherapy,Max Hospital, Gurgaon says we need to correct our posture to avoid frequent back pain.

Slouching over your desk

Excessive hunching or slouching can damage the cushioned disks of your spine between the bones and cause several problems like early arthritis. While sitting at a desk for long periods of time, you can avoid stiffness and cramping by moving your head in all 4 directions every half hour.

Sleeping on the wrong mattress

The ideal mattress should support your back and need to be soft enough to provide comfort to your back. Many stores allow you to return a mattress within a certain time period of purchase if you experience any back pain or problems. Make sure that the mattress is right for your posture.

Sitting at a desk for too long

Sitting for prolonged periods of time puts a strain on your neck and back muscles. If you must sit for long stretches of time, ensure that you do so, on a chair that can support your back and that allows you to rest your feet comfortably on the floor. It’s also highly recommended that you get up and move around every half hour to keep your body limber and healthy.

Take frequent breaks

Sleeping on your belly

It’s better to avoid sleeping on your belly if possible. When you sleep on your stomach, you’re more likely to toss and turn in the night. This can lead to back cramps and neck strains. If you can’t change the way you sleep, it can help to forgo your pillow; this way your neck stays in the correct position.

Though it may be impossible to avoid sitting at a desk altogether, it’s not impossible to follow the above tips. By maintaining the correct sitting posture as well as getting up and exercising regularly, you can significantly reduce the chances of contracting back or cervical pain
