The definition of short stay surgery is when the patient is admitted and discharged within forty eight hours of admission with surgery as the intended management. Daycare surgery is when the patient is admitted and discharged on the same day. The objective of short stay surgery is to improve the quality of patient care while reducing the length of hospital stay.
Enhanced recovery is based on established day surgery principles and is aimed at improving the quality of recovery after inpatient surgery such that the patient is well enough to go home earlier and healthier.
Short stay surgery is a continually evolving specialty, and more and more complex procedures are now carried out by different surgical specialties.
The biggest advantage of Short-stay Surgery is its convenience to the patient and his/her family. A patient suffers minimum pain, gets discharged at earliest and recovers within a day or two of the surgery. Since most short stay surgeries are minimally invasive, the damage to surrounding tissues is minimal, inflammation lesser, blood loss negligible and recovery faster.
Surgical procedures usually take just 30 minutes to two hours. High-tech surgical techniques and equipment ensure early discharge and shorter recovery time.
PATIENT BENEFITS
- Less time in hospital
- Less risk of hospital acquired infections
- Easier to rest and sleep
- Psychologically patients feel responsible for their own recovery at home.
PATIENT SELECTION
It's essential to ensure that the surgical procedure is suitable, patients have undergone pre-anaesthetic evaluation, the risk of complications (from surgery or anaesthesia) is minimal and patients are adequately supported at home after the discharge
Maxathome provides nursing servies at home for the patients.
