A fracture is a broken or cracked bone. It occurs when pressure is applied on the bone with or without displacement of bone fragments. A fracture can be simple, wherein the skin remains intact without any external bleeding - or compound - wherein there are open wounds, which would be prone to infection.

Seek medical attention in either case, if a fracture is suspected.

What to Expect

  • Severe pain
  • Difficulty in movement
  • Swelling/bruising/bleeding/redness/tenderness

Home Care

  • Do not massage the affected area
  • Do not try to straighten the broken bone
  • In case of a compound fracture follow the first-aid as for ‘cuts and wounds’. Arrest the bleeding in case of an open wound
  • Keep the injured body part elevated
  • Immobilise using a splint/sling

A First-Aid Kit for Fracture Should Include

  • Sterile Adhesive Bandages in Assorted Sizes
  • Sterile Gauze Pads of Different Sizes
  • Adhesive Tape & Band-aid
  • Cotton Buds & Cotton Roll
  • Latex Gloves
  • Thermometer
  • Scissor
  • Safety Pins
  • Sterile Saline/Distilled Water
