Cancer is recognized as a major illness affecting millions of people every year around the world. A cancer diagnosis can be shattering to patients, their family and friends. It is indeed one of the hardest times for people who are suffering from cancer. However, one can indeed fight cancer battle and come out as a winner.

Apart from the mandatory doctor visits, surgeries and chemotherapy, there are undoubtedly other things patients can incorporate in their daily lives to fight against cancer.

An anti-cancer diet is an important strategy that one can combine along with treatment to improve the chances of eliminating cancer. As one of the best cancer hospitals in Delhi, we at Max Healthcare recommend healthy nourishment for patients battling cancer.

According to various researchers, a healthy diet can increase the chances of surviving cancer. Since food is something people eat multiple times in a day, a diet rich in foods mentioned below has a constant impact on the body.

Dr Meenu Walia mentions the top 5 cancer-fighting foods that a patient must include in their diet.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Turnip, Radish, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Mustard Greens are some of the vegetables belonging to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. They are rich in sulphur-containing compounds called glucosinolates and indole-3-carbinol, which improve detoxification and reduce the risk of various cancers, respectively. These vegetables are known to be anti-cancer, reduce inflammation and enhance immunity.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Green leafy vegetables are a staple of any healthy diet since they are extremely rich in antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. They are also low in calories, sodium and fats that make them perfect addition to the anti-cancer diet. Spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, collard greens are a rich source of vitamin C as well as beta-carotene that are known to combat cancer.

Garlic

Allicin, an anti-inflammatory ingredient in garlic is known to stop the blood supply to the tumours. It contains tryptophan, selenium and Sulphur-based active ingredients that are responsible for killing the cancer cells. Studies show that phytochemicals found in garlic can stop the formation of carcinogens and nitrosamines that are formed in the stomach. Moreover, garlic reduces the risk of oesophagal, breast, colon and stomach cancers.

Tomatoes

These are high in lycopene (a type of carotenoid) that is responsible for the red colour in tomatoes. Eating tomatoes (raw or cooked) reduces the risk of lung cancer, cervix, breast and colon. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory and helps to lower the risk of heart disease.

Berries

Rich in phytonutrients, berries are cancer-fighting agents. Though all types of berries are packed with phytonutrients, however, blackberries contain a high number of phytonutrients called anthocyanins. These anthocyanins stop the growth of premalignant cells and prevent new blood vessels from feeding a tumor. They are responsible for reducing colon, oral, oesophagal and skin cancers.

You need to consult your oncologist to know how much of these foods you should consume so that you can help fight cancer. Consuming foods like nuts, mushrooms, avocado, beetroot, beans, pulses, ginger, and seeds of sunflower, flax, sesame and pumpkin can help you to fight against the risk of cancer. Our specialists suggest, eating healthy is a crucial weapon not only to fight against cancer but also to reduce the risk of several illnesses.
