  • Brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. Follow correct brushing and flossing methods as advised by your dentist. Overzealous and aggressive brushing can be harmful for your teeth. Not knowing exactly how to brush and floss is very common. Therefore, always ask your dentist to explain and illustrate the correct protocol for your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist every 6 months. A biannual professional tooth cleaning is usually suggested. Annual radiographic examination of teeth is suggested to rule out common and uncommon dental problems not seen clinically without radiographs.
  • Rule out clenching and grinding of teeth. Extensive tooth damage results due to these and ways and means to control and manage earlier in age can prevent extensive damage to the teeth, supporting bone and jaw joint.
  • Avoid refined starches and foods that stick to teeth. Also avoid carbonated drinks which are notorious in the speed and extent of tooth decay caused.
  • Treat your teeth as an integral part of your body and spend time and effort to keep them in the best of condition. They help in chewing food, speech, smiling confidently and overall sense of well being. Poor oral hygiene is a cause of social embarrassment due to oral malodour. Teeth troubles can cause immense pain, discomfort, risky infections that can spread to surrounding areas of the face and neck. Inflammation in the oral cavity caused by the two most common disease conditions of the body i.e. tooth decay and gum disease are known to influence the health of the rest of the body including but not exclusive to cardiac, gynaecologic, respiratory and joint health.
