Hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures performed globally, and more than one million hernia procedures are conducted in India alone. Unfortunately, there is a major lack of awareness and the presence of unfounded fear among patients about hernia which often leads to delays in timely hernia repair surgery.
In an attempt to curb this worrisome trend, Dr. Anupam Goel, Consultant, Minimal Access, Bariatric & Robotic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital Mohali, has launched the 'Know Your Hernia' campaign to emphasize the importance of timely umbilical hernia treatment using advanced hernia meshes.
The 'Know Your Hernia' campaign will raise patient awareness of the importance of advanced solutions available for hernia repair that offer reduced post-operative pain, shorter recovery periods, and minimal scar formation. Dr. Anupam Goel says, "Often, the hernia is asymptomatic and does not cause any discomfort to patients, which leads to delayed treatment and possible complications.
With the 'Know Your Hernia' campaign, we want to raise awareness of the highly-advanced solutions now accessible to patients that provide better results in hernia repair. The benefits of Laparoscopic or Robotic Surgery clubbed with the merits of advanced hernia meshes, have revolutionised hernia surgery for both the patients and the operating hernia surgeon. It is essentially the future of hernia surgeries worldwide".

Laparoscopic or Robotic Hernia Surgery is an advanced surgical procedure that has revolutionised modern medicine. It gives patients the benefit of decreased pain, smaller incisions, better cosmesis, minimum blood loss, early recovery, and early return to work. These surgeries are now performed in daycare, where patients are mobilised 4 hours after the surgery and discharged from the hospital within 24 hours of admission.
Elaborating on timely treatment for hernia, Dr. Goel says, "There is much progress in the surgical repair of hernia as new modern techniques and use of appropriate hernia mesh products to surgically reinforce or reconstruct anatomical defects, is now becoming standard-of-care. An increasing number of surgeons are turning towards laparoscopic technique to repair hernia as it offers improved surgical outcomes as opposed to the conventional open surgical method."
As patients get increasingly mindful of their health and well-being during the pandemic, it is paramount that they become knowledgeable on the various medical advancements and technologies available in the country today. The 'Know your Hernia' campaign is an initiative that will augment patients' knowledge of the modern techniques surgeons are increasingly engaging in for hernia repair. Increased awareness is the first step toward seeking the right course of treatment for any patient.
