- WHEN CAN A MOTHER START BREAST FEEDING?
Breast feeding should be started as soon as possible after birth of the baby preferably within 1st hour for a healthy newborn. Breast milk is thick, yellowish and in small amount for first 2-3 days. However it is very rich in nutrients and protective factors to prevent infections in the baby. So it should never be discarded.
- WHAT SHOULD BE THE FREQUENCY OF BREAST FEEDING?
Baby should be fed at least 8-10 times in 24 hours. Babies generally feed more frequently at night and tend to sleep for longer hours during day in first few weeks. Feeding schedule can be as per demand, usually 2-3 hourly.
- HOW DOES A MOTHER KNOW IF BREAST FEEDING IS SUFFICIENT?
Babies tend to sleep for 2-3 hours after a good feed. They should have at least 6 wet nappies in 24 hours if feeding is adequate and gain 20-30 gm weight per day after 1st week of life. Initially all babies lose some weight but tend to regain birth weight by 10th day. Breast fed babies tend to pass golden yellow soft stools. A baby may pass stools many times in a day or once in few days.
- HOW LONG SHOULD I BREAST FEED MY BABY?
Every healthy baby should be on exclusive breast feeds for first 6 months. Supplementary feeds are added after 6 months as per your doctor's advice. Babies born prematurely or with some other conditions may need some special feeds/supplements as per ian's advice.
- WHAT DIET SHOULD MOTHER TAKE TO IMPROVE BREAST MILK SUPPLY?
A lactating mother must drink 3 -4 litres of water in addition to other fluids like milk products and soups etc. She needs to have a healthy balanced diet without any specific restrictions. Mother must get adequate rest in between the feeds.

- WHEN SHOULD I START BATHING MY BABY? WHICH OIL SHOULD I USE FOR MASSAGE?
Bathing is started after cord has fallen off. Avoid pouring water on baby's face. Eyes can be cleaned with boiled cotton swabs (separate for each eye) if needed.
