Nutrition Tips for Cancer Patients: Eating Well for Strength and Recovery
Good nutrition is crucial in supporting cancer patients through treatment and recovery. Eating a balanced diet can help maintain strength, manage side effects, and improve overall well-being. Here are some essential nutrition tips to help cancer patients stay nourished and energised.
Maintain Adequate Calories and Protein
Choose high-calorie, high-protein foods like eggs, nuts, cottage cheese, and lean meats such as chicken and fish. Use healthy fats such as olive oil, rice bran oil, and small amounts of cow’s ghee to boost calorie intake. If needed, consider disease-specific protein supplements.
Manage Side Effects
- Loss of Appetite: Eat small, frequent meals; include nutrient-dense snacks.
- Nausea/Vomiting: Opt for bland foods (toast, rice, bananas); avoid strong odours.
- Diarrhea: Stay hydrated with electrolyte-rich fluids like lemon water, soups, coconut water, buttermilk.
- Constipation: Eat fibre-rich foods (whole grains, vegetables, fruits); drink plenty of water.
- Mouth Sores: Choose soft, cool foods (yoghurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes); avoid acidic/spicy foods.
Stay Hydrated
Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water and other liquids daily (water, fresh juice, lemon water, clear broths).
Strengthen the Immune System
Incorporate immune-boosting foods like citrus fruits, berries, garlic, ginger, and probiotics (yoghurt, kefir). If immunity is low, avoid raw or undercooked foods and wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
Prevent Muscle Loss
Include high-protein foods at every meal and engage in light exercises (as tolerated) to maintain muscle strength.
Avoid Unnecessary Dietary Restrictions
Eat a variety of foods unless a specific diet is recommended by a doctor or dietitian. Be cautious with alternative diets, and always consult a healthcare professional before making drastic changes.
Conclusion
Proper nutrition can make a major difference in how cancer patients feel during treatment and recovery. Focusing on balanced meals, hydration, and managing side effects can help improve energy levels and overall health. Always consult a healthcare professional to ensure a diet that meets individual needs.
