Cancer is treated predominantly by the means of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. These modalities, in isolation, fail to produce the desired results. Multimodal treatment is the need of the hour for a patient with cancer. Gastrointestinal cancers are very common and result in significant suffering and deaths in our country. Broadly, these cancers can be divided into esophago-gastric (cancer of food-pipe and stomach), colorectal (cancers of large intestine and rectum), and hepato-pancreato-biliary (cancers of liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreas).

Most of these tumours require surgery as one of the key aspects in their treatment. A successful surgery with clear margins and lymph node dissection (removal of draining lymph glands) is one of the most important components in the curative treatment of such cancers. Our surgeons of the gastrointestinal DMG have wide experience and expertise in the surgical management of all kinds of gastrointestinal cancers. Minimal access surgery including laparoscopic and robotic surgery is gaining ground in a wide variety of cancers. We have state-of-the-art machinery including Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) and highly experienced radiation oncologists well equipped in the application of such techniques.
