Radiation oncology is a crucial pillar in the fight against cancer. It is a specialised field that uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells present while preserving the other surrounding healthy tissues. For patients diagnosed with cancer, the journey from diagnosis to treatment completion can be overwhelming, but understanding the process can make it less troubling.
Understanding Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncology is a branch of medical science focused on using radiation to treat cancer. The process involves a team of experts, including radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and nursing staff. Each member of the team plays a crucial role in ensuring precise and safe treatment for patients.
Diagnosis and Initial Consultation
The journey of cancer care begins with a diagnosis. Once cancer is confirmed, patients are referred to a radiation oncologist who assesses their condition, reviews imaging and diagnostic studies, and discusses treatment options. This initial consultation is essential for understanding the type and stage of cancer, which determines its treatment approach.
Treatment Planning
After the consultation, a detailed treatment plan is prepared. This plan includes:
- Customisation: Immobilisation devices such as Masks, cushions, and molds are used to keep the patients in the correct position during treatment. Skin markings or tattooing may be done, which helps to align the patient during daily treatment sessions.
- CT Simulation: A CT scan (with/without contrast) is being done with immobilisation devices in place, which is needed to define the tumour and normal organs. MRI or PET scans help identify the exact location of the tumour.
- Tumour Delineation and planning: Radiation oncologists draw the tumour and suspected areas of spread along with normal organs, and the medical physicist team does the planning, maximising the radiation dose to tumour tissue and sparing the normal organs.
- Plan Review and Quality Checks: Radiation oncologists review the plan, and after approval, medical physicists do the quality checks before actual delivery.
- Treatment delivery: Daily treatment, Monday to Friday visits to the hospital. The duration of treatment may vary from 10 to 30 minutes.
Monitoring and Managing Side Effects
During treatment, patients are closely monitored for any side effects. Common side effects include skin irritation, fatigue, nausea, or localised discomfort. Regular follow-ups with doctors and supportive care ensure that adverse reactions are managed promptly and effectively.
Treatment Completion and Follow-up
Once the radiation therapy sessions are completed, patients are advised to post-treatment care and follow up with regular schedules. Regular check-ups for the patients help monitor the scale of recovery and detect any potential recurrence of cancer.
Radiation therapy is a journey, and we at Max Hospital Patparganj are here to support our patients at every step. With advanced technology and dedicated teams, we aim to provide safe and effective treatment to our patients, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
Radiation oncology is not just a treatment process; it is a comprehensive journey of care, precision, and support for our patients. Understanding this journey empowers them and their families, helping them navigate the challenges with confidence and hope.
