We all know about kidneys, two heavy duty filters of our body, which, apart from filtering blood, do a lot of other activities to keep our body healthy. Stress, sedentary lifestyle, Alcohol and tobacco consumption and diet heavy on processed foods can lead to kidney diseases. Some of these problems need timely diagnosis and care of a specialist (Urologist) for restoring the patient’s health and quality of life:
- Kidney Stones: Stones are fairly common in North Western part of India (also known as stone belt). Some people are prone to develop kidney stones recurrently. Till date, there is no medicine to prevent stone formation or treat it. Surgical treatment is the best way to get rid of kidney and gallbladder stones. With the help of advanced technologies like LASERS and specialized digital scopes, stones can be removed without a single cut or scar on the body.
- Kidney Cancer: Tumours of the kidney are one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. With the availability of advanced radiology services, majority of these are now diagnosed at an early stage. These treatments have very high cure rates following timely surgery. Minimally invasive surgical techniques using the latest da Vinci Robot enable the Urologic Surgeon to successfully remove even the most complex tumours from the kidney saving most of the normal kidney tissue not affected by Cancer. The procedure is called Robot Assisted Partial Nephrectomy. These procedures are so precise and pain free that the patient can go back to their normal life the very next day of the surgery.
- Kidney Transplant: In case of end stage kidney failure, the best treatment option is kidney transplant, which can allow the patient to return back to normal life. An experienced and skilled Transplant surgeon can ensure that kidney is safely removed from the body of voluntary donor and successfully transplanted into the patient. Robot assisted kidney transplant gives the patient an advantage of minimally invasive surgery The advanced Kidney Transplant Programme has 3 forms of transplant – Cadaveric, Living Related, ABO Incompatible (to enable kidney transplant from a donor of blood group other than the receiver).
Some tips to safeguard kidneys:
- Drink around 2500 – 3000 ml of fluids per day, adjust according to weather. Increase fluid intake if in warm/hot weather or engaged in outdoor activities.
- Avoid excessive salt, junk foods, carbonated soft drinks.
- Ensure you have a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Do NOT ignore symptoms of blood in urine. It can be the first indication of some disease lurking inside the body.
