One in four adults is at a risk for kidney disease in India. Major risk factors include diabetes and high Blood Pressure (BP). In India, diabetes and hypertension today account for 40 – 60 per cent cases of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Since both of these disorders are related to unhealthy nutritional intake and/or physical inactivity, they are potentially preventable and reversible.
Here are a few useful tips which you can use to make small changes in your lifestyle and reap big benefits:
- Eat a balanced diet: Eating a healthy diet will help maintain the Body Mass Index (BMI) between 23-25 kg/m2. Start your day with a healthy breakfast and encourage small frequent meals. Reduce intake of simple sugars.
- Cut sodium intake: Today we all consume 50 per cent more than the recommended quantity of sodium daily — 2,300 mg. About one teaspoon of salt should be the daily limit. About 75 per cent of salt comes from processed foods such as ready to take soups, sauces, pickles, potato chips, cheese spreads, namkeens, have high per cent of sodium and phosphorus additives, which cause harmful effects on the kidneys. So, avoid having too much of processed or packaged foods.
- Flush toxins out of body: Your body produces toxins daily as a result of the food we eat and also due to environmental pollution. Body needs to flush out toxins and what better way than to clean your system than taking plenty of water and fluids.
- Stop consuming aerated drinks: Sugar-sweetened aerated drinks have high calorie and phosphorus additives, which harm kidneys.
- Exercise daily: Apart from changing your diet, exercise is probably the single best medication to prevent oneself from kidney disease.
