Urological conditions in men are common, and the practice of urology is a vital component of men’s healthcare. This medical specialty focuses on a variety of urologic diseases affecting the specific parts of the body. In males, these diseases affect the urinary tract or the reproductive organs. While in females, urologic diseases only affect the urinary tract.

However, we will just be talking about the top urology issues that affect men.

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Also known as enlarged prostate, BPH occurs when the size of the prostate gland increases. This condition is highly prevalent in older men above the age of 40 and is not directly connected with prostate cancer as most people believe. Men who have this condition experience a frequent urge to urinate which can be coupled with a weak stream of urine or a feeling that their bladder is not empty.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Weak stream of urine
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Difficulty in initiating urination
  • The feeling of a full bladder
  • Dribbling at the end of urination

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

A highly common condition, urinary tract infections occur when pathogenic viruses or bacteria invade the urinary tract that leads to infection. The most common symptom of UTI is that it causes a burning sensation when urinating. However, cloudy urine and painful urination are also common symptoms of this condition. If a person has any of the symptoms, it is advisable to see the best urologist for timely treatment.

  • Erectile Dysfunction

Also termed as impotence, erectile dysfunction or ED is a condition that causes sexual dysfunction in males. The most noticeable characteristic of erectile dysfunction is the inability of males to either maintain or develop a constant erection of the penis during any sexual activity. The most common causes of erectile dysfunction are either diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, some neurological issues can also trigger erectile dysfunction. Conditions such as hypogonadism or drug abuse can also lead to erectile dysfunction. This condition is linked with psychological consequences and may lead to loss of self-image. In case a person has erectile dysfunction, it is recommended to check the list of urologists and consult one specializing in the same.

  • Kidney and Ureteral Stones

Kidney and ureteral stones are highly common in men. The stones that develop in kidney and other parts of the urinary system are hard deposits of salts and minerals. These stones can travel through the urinary tract – from kidneys to the bladder and beyond. Ureteral stones are the ones that move from the kidneys to the ureter. Stones in these parts of the body can block the urine flow and cause excruciating pain. Moreover, if stones are left untreated, they can prove to be fatal. The signs and symptoms include:

  • Abnormal urine colour
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Blood in urine
  • Fever
  • Vomiting

  • Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is characterised by loss of bladder control which leads to leakage of urine. Since this condition is involuntary and can happen anytime, the patient can feel embarrassed and inconvenient. Urinary incontinence in men can be caused by many other conditions such as:

  • Overactive bladder
  • Diabetes
  • Weak bladder muscles
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Injury to the spinal cord
  • Weak sphincter muscles

Treating this condition requires medical intervention, and sometimes even a surgical procedure if medications are not helpful.

Men suffer from a lot of urologic conditions, much more than women. The primary reason is that both urine and sperm pass through the penis, making the urinary and reproductive systems interrelated. Treating any urologic condition at earliest is essential. We at Max Healthcare have an experienced team of urologists who specialise in treating all disorders of the urinary and reproductive system.
