A Vasectomy is a common procedure for male sterilization. It’s an excellent form of permanent birth control without the use of medicine. However, there are many myths surrounding this procedure in India. Dr. Anjani Kumar Agrawal, Senior Consultant and Unit Head (Andrology) debunk some of the prominent myths surrounding Vasectomy.

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a simple surgery done by a doctor in a hospital or a clinic. The small tubes in your scrotum that carry sperm are blocked off so that you are unable to get someone pregnant. A Vasectomy is non-reversible and it’s intended to be permanent, so make sure that you talk it over with your partner before undergoing the surgery.

Will my Testosterone levels decrease?

No, they won’t. It’s true that your testicles produce Testosterone. However, the Testosterone is transported to the rest of your body through the bloodstream, not through the tubes that are sealed off in a Vasectomy. Your Testosterone levels will not decrease following a Vasectomy.

Will a Vasectomy impair my ability to ejaculate?

No, it won’t. Your ejaculatory fluid is produced in the prostate and seminal vesicles – which aren’t cut during a Vasectomy. You will still be able to ejaculate, but your semen will no longer contain any sperm. As sperm accounts for less than one percent of the semen’s mass, the quantum of your ejaculatory discharge remains approximately the same.

Will a Vasectomy cause Erectile Dysfunction?

A Vasectomy will not affect the muscles or the nerves responsible for erections. The tubes that are sealed during the procedure are not responsible for the creation or sustenance of an erection. As a result, a vasectomy will not affect your ability to have an erection.

Is Vasectomy the same as Castration?

No, not at all! Castration is a procedure in which your testicles are removed. A Vasectomy, on the other hand, is a minor operation in which the tubes that carry your sperm are sealed off. As a result, there will be no visible damage to your testicles.

A Vasectomy is a great form of permanent birth control. If you and your partner are 100% sure that you’re done with having kids, then maybe a Vasectomy is the procedure for you. It’s safe, quick, and relatively complication-free.

Is Vasectomy Reversible?

Yes, Vasectomy reversal is possible, and it is done by an expert Andrologist with the help of Operating Microscope (which is available in tertiary center Hospital )
