Prostate gland is located at the outlet of urinary bladder surrounding the urinary tube (urethra). It is found only in males. Prostate gland secretes a substance which helps in the nutrition of sperms.

DR. Anupam Bhargava, Chairman-Urology, Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, describes 3 complications of prostate gland:

  • Infection in Prostate Gland: This condition is called Prostatitis. It can be due to infection produced by bacteria’s or it can be due to nonbacterial irritation of prostate gland. Bacterial prostatitis gives rise to burning in urination, poor urinary flow, fever with chills and is more common in Diabetic individuals. Nonbacterial prostatitis gives rise to vague urinary symptoms. The patient suffers with frequency of urination, pain in lower abdomen, and lower back. This is a recurrent problem where antibiotics usually do not help. It is more common in younger age group. The serious complication of infection in neglected patient could be formation of abscess in prostate. This may lead to life threatening situation called ‘Septicaemia’.

  • Enlargement of Prostate: Benign (Non-cancerous) enlargement of prostate- Due to this patient develops poor urinary flow, increased frequency of urination along with feeling of incomplete evacuation of urinary bladder. If neglected, the large gland can obscure the urinary passage and one may develop sudden retention of urine.

In enlargement of prostate, patient can take medicines to open the urinary passage and reduce the size of prostate. This treatment may cure the patient completely and surgery can be avoided. If the size enlarged and the symptoms are grave, the gland is removed by endoscopic method. This can be done either by using electrical current or laser.

  • Cancer of Prostate Gland: Third problem is a cancerous growth in the gland. Unfortunately in the early curable stage it does not give rise to any symptoms, only a blood test called ‘Prostatic specific antigen’ (PSA) is raised. At present, this test is also not very reliable as it also rises in other non-malignant conditions. When the cancer of prostate advances it gives rise to tdifficulty in passing urine and can also cause complete obstruction to flow of urine. If the patient comes in curable stage, it can be achieved by either complete removal of prostate or by radiation. If the patient comes to the doctor in the stage where cancer has grown outside the prostate gland then the patient is treated using hormonal treatment.
