Why Live with Pain ? It can be cured!

Depression, anxiety, helplessness, irritation, insomnia are all causing you pain. It is not only disrupting your daily routine but also hampering your personal and social life. Pain can be throbbing, tingling, burning and excruciating. The frequency may differ from few times a day to continuous severe pain. It can occur anywhere in the body due to trauma or an existing disease. It is true that everyone experiences it but the question is what are you doing to get rid of it? Below are 6 self help tips:

Take deep breaths:  Slow and deep breathing will keep you relaxed and avoid any muscle anxiety/tension that can worsen your pain. If you concentrate on deep breathing, you can help reduce the pain.

Counselling : Few people find it useful to take help from a psychologist or a counsellor to deal with their pain. Learn to be patient with yourself as you can be your own enemy if you act stubborn. Try to limit your expectations and not pace with everyday activities as failure can make you feel vulnerable, anxious, depressed and tired.

Exercise to rejuvenate: Everyday activities like dancing, gardening, swimming, walking, can stimulate your nerves and block the pain signals to travel to your brain. Simple activities can provide relief from pain and release tension from ligaments, joints and muscles.

Talk about your pain: Discussing about your pain with someone you feel close to can make you feel better. It is quite possible that they might be going through a similar pain but may be hesitant about sharing their experience. You can keep in touch with local patient support groups who will understand what you are going through.

Practice Meditation: You can do several relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, different types of meditation that will help you deal with pain. There must be classes available at your pain clinic to reduce the persistent pain.   

Sleep Well: The cure for all types of pain is to “Sleep Well” as it goes well with a saying “Sleep over problems”. Lack of sleep can worsen the pain and make you feel vulnerable. Try to follow a normal sleeping pattern i.e. waking up and sleeping at the same time every day. Avoid taking afternoon naps so you have higher chances of sleeping through the night.

Pain can be diagnosed by different modalities like examination, blood tests and various radiological imaging. A comprehensive pain assessment by a multidisciplinary team is needed and can be managed by experts and a holistic approach. Cancer pain, Post operative, Bony pain, Neurological pain, Muscular Pain all can be treated either with medication or with intervention. It is important is to try and cure the disease and relieve pain.
