Well-being, or wellness, is the overall positive state of being that includes physical, mental, emotional, financial and environmental, and spiritual aspects. Taking care of our bodies is just only one aspect of well-being; we must take a holistic and preventive approach to life.
It is an active and intentional method of making ourselves the best possible versions we can be.
World well-being week encourages inculcating positive practices in our lives, which include factors like:
-
Connecting with people
Humans are social creatures; it is necessary for us to connect with people so that we can exchange and create new, positive experiences, provide support and build our sense of community and belongingness.
-
Being physically active
Exercising and keeping fit not only boosts physical health but also stimulates us mentally. It can improve self-esteem and give us a sense of accomplishment. It is necessary to find ways of remaining active that you find enjoyable so you can actually work towards being your best self.
-
Be giving
Acts of kindness and giving can establish a sense of positivity, purpose, and self-worth. It can mean helping individuals or volunteering for your community.
-
Learning
A continuous process, it boosts our confidence and gives a sense of meaning in our lives. It can be as simple as trying to listen to a podcast, reading a book, trying out a new recipe or being observant of your own surroundings.
-
Practicing gratefulness
Practicing gratefulness is another way of inculcating a positive outlook toward life which in turn reduces stress and makes one resilient enough to go with the flow of life.
Remaining mindful of well-being also allows us to manage our expectations and experiences positively. It is like a glass-half-full situation. Well-being and wellness are not new concepts - they are now being emphasised due to the numerous benefits they offer.
We all have a chance to live a good life by being mindful, taking care of ourselves, keeping our priorities right in life, and practising small, simple steps as outlined above to make life whole, healthy and joyful.
