The role of the kidneys is often underrated when we think about our health. In fact, kidneys play a significant part in the daily functioning of our body. With an objective to educate people about healthy kidneys Dr. Puneet Arora, Head of Nephrology Department at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun shares important points regarding our kidney care.

The kidneys are vital for life as their complex network of blood vessels and intricate network of tubes and tubules filter blood off the waste products and excess water. Kidneys maintain the fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base regulation that are altered by several disease conditions as well as drugs and toxins. The kidneys also play a pivotal role in the production and regulation of several important hormones and enzymes, which help to control blood pressure, make red blood cells and maintain strong and healthy bones. All this makes the kidneys an essential player in our body’s mechanism and our overall health. We want to spread the message of maintaining healthy kidneys by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Owing to unhealthy lifestyle habits, people may face different types of kidney problems like chronic kidney disease, presence of blood, proteins or casts and crystals in the urine, cystitis (bladder infections), Pyelonephritis (kidney infection), kidney stones, acid base imbalance or electrolyte disorders, cancers of the kidneys or urinary bladder, Diabetic nephropathy, Hypertensive nephrosclerosis, nephritic syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, Glomerulonephritis, etc. First and foremost people should be careful about their lifestyle as it directly impacts kidney health.

Dr Arora further shares, “There are many risk factors that can contribute to kidney disease, and it’s important to be aware of these risks and take the right steps to prevent kidney damage. The main risk factors are Diabetes, High blood pressure, Cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease and a family history of kidney failure. Sometimes the symptoms of kidney disease may go unnoticed as you may not feel any difference until the disease is in its advanced stage. Blood and urine tests are the only way to know if you have kidney disease. Hence it is important to get regular blood and urine tests done.”
