Tinea versicolor is also called Pityriasis versicolor. It is a fungal infection of the skin that suppresses an individual's immune system, resulting in small, round patches of discoloured spots on the skin. These patches are either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. For individuals with dark skin, these patches appear white or light tan, whereas for more delicate skin, these patches appear light red or pink.
Occasionally the patches turn scaly or dry. On exposure to the sun, the rest of the body is exposed to tanning, but the infected area will remain as such. It is mainly caused due to overgrowth of microorganisms like yeast which thrives on the skin's surface. When the yeast grows excessively, it appears as a rash. This condition is neither painful nor contagious but can result in emotional distress and depression.
There are other conditions which resemble Tinea Versicolor closely. These are Vitiligo and Pityriasis rosea.
The main noticeable symptom of this condition includes discoloured patches of skin, which appear primarily on the arms, chest, back and even neck. Apart from these patches, other symptoms are as follows:
Tinea versicolor occurs due to the overgrowth of yeast on the skin surface. The following factors are responsible for this condition:
To diagnose this condition, the doctor examines the patient and performs the following tests:
The type of treatment will depend on the skin surface's size, location, and thickness. The treatment of this condition comprises creams, lotions and oral medications.
Risk factors for this condition include:
It can be difficult to treat the recurrence of this condition in an individual. However, once an individual is successfully treated for this, they can prevent further recurrence in future by adopting the following measures:
Tinea versicolor isn't a serious condition and only involves the superficial layer of the skin. However, people experience more than one incidence of this condition because of the possibility of recurrence. The application of antifungal ointments, lotions, creams, and oral medications proves to help individuals suffering from this condition immensely.

What is pityriasis/tinea versicolor, and what causes it?
Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal infection of the skin that is caused by the yeast Malassezia. This yeast is naturally present on the skin, but certain factors, such as warm and humid environments, hormonal changes, and a weakened immune system, can lead to its overgrowth and the development of tinea versicolor.
How is pityriasis/tinea versicolor diagnosed?
Pityriasis versicolor is typically diagnosed through a physical examination by a healthcare professional. They may use a special ultraviolet light called a Wood's lamp to visualize the characteristic colour changes in the affected skin. In some cases, a skin scraping or culture may be performed to confirm the presence of the yeast.
What are the treatment options for pityriasis/Tinea versicolor?
Treatment options for pityriasis versicolor include topical antifungal creams, lotions, or shampoos. These medications help to eliminate the yeast and restore the normal balance of the skin.
Can over-the-counter antifungal creams treat pityriasis/Tinea versicolor?
Yes, mild cases of pityriasis versicolor can often be effectively treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or lotions. However, if the infection persists or is more severe, it may be necessary to consult a healthcare professional for stronger prescription medications.
Is prescription medication necessary for treating pityriasis/Tinea versicolor?
In some cases, prescription-strength antifungal medications may be necessary to effectively treat pityriasis versicolor. These medications may include oral antifungal tablets or stronger topical creams or lotions prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Can pityriasis versicolor be treated with natural remedies?
While some natural remedies like tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, or coconut oil may have antifungal properties, their effectiveness in treating pityriasis versicolor is not well-established.
How long does it take for pityriasis/Tinea versicolor to clear up with treatment?
The duration of treatment for pityriasis versicolor depends on the severity of the infection and the chosen treatment method. Typically, it may take several weeks for the rash to completely clear up, and even after the visible symptoms are gone, it is important to continue treatment to prevent recurrence.
Are there any lifestyle changes that can help prevent pityriasis versicolor recurrence?
Yes, certain lifestyle changes can help prevent pityriasis versicolor recurrence. These may include avoiding excessive heat and humidity, wearing loose-fitting clothing, practising good skin hygiene, and using antifungal soaps or washes regularly. It is also important to address underlying factors, such as hormonal imbalances or weakened immune systems, if present.
Can pityriasis versicolor spread to other parts of the body?
Pityriasis versicolor is not highly contagious and does not typically spread from person to person. However, the yeast responsible for the infection can spread to other areas of the body, leading to the development of new patches. Proper treatment and preventive measures can help minimize the spread.
Does pityriasis versicolor cause permanent skin damage?
Pityriasis versicolor does not usually cause permanent skin damage. However, the infection can result in temporary changes in skin pigmentation, with affected areas appearing lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. These changes can take some time to fade even after the infection is treated, but they generally resolve on their own.
Can pityriasis versicolor be mistaken for other skin conditions?
Yes, pityriasis versicolor can be mistaken for other skin conditions such as vitiligo, pityriasis rosea, or even eczema. It is important to consult a doctor or dermatologist for a diagnosis, as the treatment approaches for these conditions may differ.
What is the role of antifungal shampoos in treating pityriasis versicolor?
Antifungal shampoos can be effective in treating tinea versicolor on the scalp. These shampoos are typically used a few times a week and left on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing off. They help eliminate the yeast and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Are there any side effects associated with pityriasis versicolor treatments?
Most topical antifungal treatments for tinea versicolor have minimal side effects. However, some may experience mild skin irritation, redness, or dryness at the application site. If any significant side effects occur, consult a doctor for further guidance.
Can pityriasis versicolor be treated with oral medications?
Yes, in more severe or recurrent cases, oral antifungal medications may be prescribed by a healthcare professional. These medications help to eliminate the yeast from within the body. Close monitoring by a healthcare professional is necessary during oral treatment.
Does pityriasis versicolor go away on its own without treatment?
Pityriasis versicolor may sometimes resolve on its own, especially in mild cases. However, it is recommended to seek treatment to prevent the infection from spreading or recurring. Medical intervention can speed up the healing process and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
Can pityriasis versicolor be prevented?
While it is not always possible to prevent pityriasis versicolor, certain preventive measures can help reduce the risk of recurrence. These include practising good skin hygiene, avoiding excessive sweating, using antifungal soaps or washes regularly, and wearing breathable clothing in hot and humid environments.
Is pityriasis versicolor contagious?
Pityriasis versicolor is considered a low-contagious condition. The yeast that causes tinea versicolor is naturally present on the skin and does not usually spread from person to person. However, the yeast can spread to different areas of the body or be transmitted indirectly through shared items like towels or clothing.
Can pityriasis versicolor affect people of all ages?
Yes, pityriasis versicolor can affect individuals of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. However, it is more commonly seen in young adults and adolescents, especially in regions with warm and humid climates.
What are the potential complications of untreated pityriasis versicolor?
Untreated pityriasis versicolor may lead to cosmetic concerns due to the changes in skin pigmentation. It can also increase the risk of recurrence and spread to other areas of the body. Additionally, the presence of tinea versicolor can cause psychological distress and impact an individual's self-esteem.
Are there any specific recommendations for managing pityriasis versicolor in pregnant women?
Pregnant women with pityriasis versicolor should consult their healthcare provider for appropriate treatment options. Some antifungal medications may not be recommended during pregnancy, so discuss the risks and benefits of treatment with a doctor.
Can pityriasis versicolor be treated with topical creams alone?
In many cases, mild to moderate pityriasis versicolor can be treated with topical antifungal creams or lotions. These medications are applied directly to the affected areas of the skin and help eliminate the yeast. However, more severe or recurrent cases may require additional treatment modalities.
Are there any dietary recommendations for managing pityriasis versicolor?
While no specific diet has been proven to cure pityriasis versicolor, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet can support overall skin health and immune function. Consume a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Some studies suggest that reducing the intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates may be beneficial, as the yeast that causes pityriasis versicolor thrives on these substances. However, dietary changes alone may not be sufficient to treat the infection and should be combined with appropriate medical treatment.
Can Pityriasis versicolor be treated with natural remedies?
Some natural remedies may have antifungal properties that can help in managing pityriasis versicolor. For example, tea tree oil, aloe vera gel, and coconut oil are commonly used as natural remedies. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of these remedies may vary, and they should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
