Overview
Bleeding from the stomach, small or large intestines is a major source of morbidity and sometimes mortality. When bleeding does not stop by conventional means, abdominal angiography and embolisation provides a means of arresting the bleeding.
Abdominal angiography is a minimally invasive procedure to arrest bleeding in the stomach or intestines. It is recommended not only to indicate the site of bleed but also to arrest the bleeding by closing the vessel (embolisation) that is supplying the area of bleeding. Therefore, you can avoid extensive surgery that involves removal of intestines.
In cases where surgery is required, this procedure is helpful in reducing morbidity by giving a clear picture to surgeons about the exact location of the diseased part of bowel, thus avoiding unnecessary resection. This reduces the time of surgery and post-operative complications.
