Rectal Prolapse is a condition in which the rectum (distal most part of large intestine just above the anal canal) protrudes out of the anal opening due to stretching or disruption of its attachments to the posterior abdominal wall.

Signs and Symptoms

The most common symptom is a reddish-brown mass that comes out from the opening of the anus, particularly following a bowel movement. Bleeding is another most apparent symptom.

Causes of Rectal Prolapse

Rectal Prolapse occurs due to following conditions:

  • Constipation
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Malnutrition and malabsorption (celiac disease is an example)
  • Pinworms (enterobiasis)
  • Prior injury to the anus or pelvic area
  • Whipworm infection (trichuriasis)

Treatment

Rectal prolapse in children, during pregnancy, and following childbirth are known to heal on their own and most often do not require any medical intervention. However, in case of adults, surgery may need to be done to treat rectal prolapse. There are 2 procedures described for repair of rectal prolapse- Perineal Approach and Abdominal Approach.
