Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the skin using a device with fine needles. This technique stimulates the body's natural healing process and collagen production, improving skin texture, reducing scarring, and rejuvenating the overall skin. Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and trained skincare professionals perform microneedling.

Non-invasive procedure
Alternate Names:
Collagen induction therapy, derma rolling, skin needling, percutaneous collagen induction (PCI).

Benefits of Microneedling
Microneedling offers several benefits for the skin. Some of them include:
- Skin Rejuvenation: Microneedling improves the skin's texture and tone by inducing collagen production, making it appear more youthful and radiant.
- Reduction of Scars and Stretch Marks: Microneedling may reduce the appearance of scars from surgery, acne and stretch marks by encouraging the formation of new collagen and breaking down scar tissue.
- Minimisation of wrinkles and fine lines: The production of elastin fibres and new collagen helps to plump the skin and reduces the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines.
- Hyperpigmentation Treatment: Microneedling can fade areas of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots or melasma, by breaking up pigmented cells and promoting the growth of new, evenly pigmented skin.
- Increased product absorption: During the procedure, microchannels are created to improve the absorption of skin care products and allow for deeper penetration into the skin, maximising their effectiveness.
Note: When microneedling is combined with PRP, the procedure is called Vampire facial . This procedure is made popular by the famous Hollywood actress Kim Kardashin.
Preparation for Microneedling
- Before undergoing microneedling, your skin condition will be assessed by a doctor to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure.
- Doctors may advise not to use certain skincare products or medications that may increase the risk of complications.
- Additionally, it is advisable to discontinue retinoids and exfoliating agents a few days before the treatment to prevent excessive skin sensitivity.
How Microneedling is Performed?
The microneedling procedure includes the following steps:
- Cleansing: To remove any dirt, oil and makeup from the area of treatment, a thorough cleaning is carried out.
- A numbing cream (optional): A topical anaesthetic cream may be used to reduce any discomfort during treatment.
- Microneedling device: The doctor uses a microneedling device, such as a dermaroller or a pen-like device with disposable needle cartridges, to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The needle depth is adjusted according to the skin issues being treated.
- Treatment Application: During the procedure, the professional may apply a serum or growth factor solution to the skin, which is absorbed more effectively through the microchannels created by the needles.
- Treatment completion: Once the targeted area has been treated, a soothing serum or moisturiser is applied to the skin to promote healing.
Risks and Side Effects of Microneedling
While microneedling is generally considered safe, there are potential risks and side effects, including:
- Skin Irritation: Mild redness, swelling, and sensitivity are expected after the procedure, but they usually subside within a few days.
- Infection: If proper sterilisation and hygiene protocols are not followed, there is a risk of bacterial or fungal infection. It is important to choose a reputable professional and ensure that sterile equipment is used.
- Skin Damage: Excessive pressure or aggressive needling can cause skin damage, scarring, or pigmentation changes. It is important to have the procedure performed by a trained professional.
- Allergic Reactions: Due to the topical products used during and after the treatment, some people may experience an allergic reaction.
Recovery after Microneedling
- The recovery period after microneedling varies depending on the individual skin sensitivity and the depth of the treatment.
- Common after-effects include mild redness, swelling, and possible pinpoint bleeding, which typically resolve within a few days.
- Protecting the treated skin from sun exposure and following the post-treatment instructions provided by the professional is important.
- The full benefits of microneedling usually become noticeable over several weeks as the skin's collagen production continues to improve its texture and appearance.
- Multiple sessions with intervals of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments can be recommended to achieve optimal results.
