At international centres of excellence, robotic and laparoscopic surgeries have almost replaced traditional open surgeries. Robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are comparatively patient-friendly as they involve less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and better cosmesis. Dr. Nitin describes robotic surgery as a precision surgery which is important to emphasise that robot is controlled and operated by the surgeon. The robot provides superior 3D vision with replicating human wrist movements and eliminating tremor and fatigue. These translate into precision surgery. At Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr. Nitin’s department completely utilises all the 3 techniques; robotic, laparoscopic and open. Their results in terms of anastomotic leak, readmission rates and cancer clearance are consistent with current international standards.
