Abhay Soi

Abhay is a first-generation entrepreneur and Chairman and Managing Director of Max Healthcare Institute Limited. He is largely credited with the transformation of Max Healthcare and the rapid expansion of its hospital network.

He was awarded the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Business Transformation in 2021 and the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Forbes India Leadership Awards in 2023. Additionally, he received the prestigious Hurun Industry Achievement Award 2022 - Healthcare for significantly contributing to the development of the country’s healthcare infrastructure and was recognised as one of India’s Top 5 Self-Made Entrepreneurs of the Millennium 2024 by Hurun India. He was also recognised as one of the highest individual taxpayers in India in the assessment year 2023-24.

Under his leadership, Max Healthcare has emerged as  India's most valuable listed healthcare organisation, with a market cap of USD ~10 Bn, and is a constituent of the Nifty 50 index. It is recognised amongst the top 20 companies in the S&P BSE 100 Index for corporate governance excellence. It is a network of 21 healthcare facilities with 6,000+ bed capacity and employs over 40,000 personnel. In addition to its core hospital business, Max Healthcare operates one of the largest healthcare-at-home businesses – Max@Home, and one of the largest pathology services in North India under the brand Max Lab. 

Most Max Healthcare hospitals are teaching hospitals with over 600 DNB students and more than ~140 ongoing clinical research projects, many of which are published in some of the leading and well-respected medical journals.

Max Healthcare reserves 7.5% of its beds for free services to patients from economically weaker sections of society. In the last financial year, the organisation provided free treatment to over 3.60 Lakh patients from economically weaker sections of society. Max Healthcare also organised over 1,600 outpatient camps in the communities and reached over 1,15,000 people. Abhay personally drives these philanthropic initiatives, reinforcing Max Healthcare’s commitment to inclusive and compassionate care.

Abhay is a nominated expert on the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and serves as a member of its Mission Steering Group (MSG), constituted under the Chairmanship of the Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. He also served as the President of NATHEALTH, the apex body representing the Indian healthcare industry for FY 2024-25.

Abhay continues to be one of the leading voices for private healthcare in India and is regularly heard in national debates on issues facing private healthcare providers.

He started his career with Arthur Andersen, where he led financial restructuring services, and then at E&Y and KPMG. 

He has an MBA from European University, Belgium, and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. Abhay was conferred with an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) by Amity University for his contributions to transform and improve the healthcare system in India.
