Types of Prostate Laser Surgery

The different kinds of prostate laser surgeries include:

  • Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP): The excess prostate tissue melts away, and the urinary channel broadens with the help of a laser.
  • Holmium Laser Ablation of the Prostate (HoLAP): This procedure is like PVP, but it uses a different type of laser.
  • Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP): Laser removes the excess tissue blocking the urethra. The prostate tissue is then cut into small pieces that are easily removed. HoLEP is a suitable option for men who have a severely enlarged prostate.

The type of laser surgery a doctor recommends will depend on several factors, including:

  • The size of the prostate
  • The overall health of the patient
  • The type of laser equipment available

Why is a Prostate Laser Surgery Done?

Prostate laser surgery helps minimise urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, including:

  • Frequent and urgent need to urinate
  • Slow urination
  • Difficulty in urinating
  • Stopping and starting again while urinating
  • Increased frequency of urination at night
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Unable to empty the bladder

What to Expect Before the Procedure

Before surgery, the patient is either given general anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia. In case of general anaesthesia, the patient will be unconscious during the procedure, whereas in case of spinal anaesthesia, the patient will remain conscious. The results of the prostate laser surgery depend on the type of laser and technique used. Furthermore, the prostate laser surgery cost also depends on the method used by the doctor.

What to Expect During the Procedure

During the surgery, the doctor inserts a scope through the tip of the penis into the tube that carries urine from the bladder (urethra). The prostate surrounds the urethra. A laser passed through the scope delivers energy that shrinks or removes excess tissue that prevents the urine flow. Depending on the procedure, the surgeon might also use different instruments to remove or cut pieces of prostate tissue from the bladder.

What to Expect After the Procedure

The patient is likely to have a urinary catheter in place due to the swelling that blocks urine flow. If a person is unable to urinate after the tube is removed, the doctor might reinsert the catheter to allow the patient to heal or give them catheters that they can insert on their own a few times a day until the swelling goes away and they can pass urine normally.

Prostate laser surgery improves urinary flow for the majority of men. Results are often long-lasting and effective for the prostate laser surgery price paid by the patient. However, in some cases, the laser surgery is unable to remove all of the prostate tissue blocking urine flow or the tissue grows back, and there arises a need for further treatment.

What are the advantages of Laser Surgery for prostate?

Prostate Surgery with Laser is almost bloodless. It can be offered for very large prostate and patients with cardiac co morbidity on blood thinners. Complications due to conventional TURP can be reduced significantly
