Paediatric (Ped) Neurosurgery

Overview

Paediatric Neurosurgery is a specialised field of Neurosurgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of neurological disorders in children. This field involves surgical interventions on the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system to treat various conditions, such as congenital anomalies of brain & spine, brain tumours, hydrocephalus, epilepsy and trauma.

Our team of highly skilled and experienced neurosurgeons are dedicated to provide the highest quality care to the paediatric patients with neurological conditions that require surgical intervention. We have a dedicated PICU with Paediatric Intensivist for round the clock care of patients. We understand that having a child undergo surgery can be a daunting experience, and our team is committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care in a child-friendly environment.

Our team is comprised of specially trained paediatric neurosurgeon with expertise in a wide range of pediatric neurosurgical conditions, including:

  • Brain tumours: Brain tumours are abnormal growths that can develop in the brain tissue. These tumours can be cancerous or noncancerous and can cause a wide range of symptoms depending on their location, size, and type.
  • Hydrocephalus: Hydrocephalus is a condition that occurs when there is an excess of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. This can put pressure on the brain tissue and cause damage. Hydrocephalus can be congenital or acquired and can be treated with P shunt surgery or endoscopic surgery.
  • Spinal cord tumours: Spinal cord tumours are abnormal growths that can develop in the spinal cord tissue. These tumours can be cancerous or noncancerous and can cause a wide range of symptoms depending on their location, size, and type.
  • Craniosynostosis: Craniosynostosis is a condition where the bones of the skull fuse together too early, which can cause abnormal skull growth and shape. This condition can cause developmental delays and can be treated with surgery.
  • Chiari malformations: Chiari malformations are structural defects in the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. This condition can cause a wide range of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and difficulty swallowing.
  • Epilepsy surgery: Epilepsy surgery is a type of surgery that is used to treat seizures in people who have not responded to other treatments. This surgery involves removing the part of the brain that is causing the seizures.
  • Traumatic brain injury: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a type of brain injury that occurs when there is a sudden blow or jolt to the head. This can cause a wide range of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and difficulty with memory and concentration.
  • Spinal dysraphism: Spinal dysraphism is a condition where the spinal cord does not develop properly. This can cause a wide range of symptoms, including paralysis, bladder and bowel problems, and developmental delays.
  • Vascular malformations: They may be in form of AVM, Cavernoma, Moya Moya Syndrome and may cause weakness of limbs, seziures, headache.

At Max Healthcare, various procedures are used to treat neurological conditions in children. Some common procedures include:

  • Endoscopic procedures: These minimally invasive procedures are used to treat conditions such as hydrocephalus and craniosynostosis. Endoscopes are inserted through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to view and operate on the affected area.
  • Shunt placement: A shunt is a small tube that is surgically placed in ventricle to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid. This is a common procedure for children with hydrocephalus.
  • Tumour removal: Surgery may be necessary to remove brain or spinal cord tumours in children. The procedure will depend on the location and size of the tumour.
  • Epilepsy surgery: Children with epilepsy that cannot be controlled with medication may require surgery to remove the part of the seizure focus of brain that is causing seizures.
  • Craniotomy: A craniotomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the skull to access the brain. This procedure may be necessary for tumour removal or other conditions.
  • Spinal fusion: Children with spinal deformities such as scoliosis may require spinal fusion surgery to correct the curvature of the spine.

We are equipped with the latest technology and advanced surgical techniques, such as MRI, CT scan, endoscopy, microsurgery, Stereotactic, Neuromonitoring, and Intraoperative Imaging, and we work collaboratively with other specialists, such as pediatric oncologists, neurologists, and rehabilitation specialists, to provide comprehensive care for your child.
