The Speech Therapy department assesses, diagnoses and treats children and adults having difficulty with speech, language and swallowing. Common conditions treated by speech therapists- 

  • Articulation disorders- The patient finds it difficult to produce specific speech sounds. For example, a rat may sound like wat.
  • Fluency disorder- It is a condition in which the patient is unable to maintain the rhythm, rate, and fluency. They repeat syllables, phrases and words. Such people tend to avoid speaking due to fluency disorder which impacts their psychological, social and emotional well-being.
  • Resonance disorder- Denasality is a cul de sac effect caused by restriction of nasal airflow due to adenoids. Hypernasality is due to cleft palate, submucous cleft, poor velopharyngeal closure or neurological disorders. 
  • Receptive disorder- Patients with this communication disorder face difficulty comprehending others' speech. It affects the processing of verbal and written language Autism, head injury.  
  • Expressive disorder- Patients with expressive disorders can understand others' speech but find it difficult to express themselves in words. Also known as Pragmatic Skill Disorder.
  • Cognitive communication disorder- It is caused due to a brain injury that affects the person's ability to think. 
  • Learning Difficulty and Processing Problems- Seen in children who lack the ability to pick up instructions, have short listening span and attention span. They find it difficult to recall what they may have been taught. Children born in the lockdown period are showing concerns of this kind. Their speech language is delayed and social skills are poor.
