CA Appendix Treated Successfully at Max Hospital

in Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj

Nov 24 , 2022

A 64-year-old lady visited the emergency department of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, with complaints of severe abdomen pain, vomiting along with high-grade fever in September 2020. On examination, the patient was toxic in appearance and had severe abdominal tenderness and guarding. Her scans were suggestive of a ruptured appendix with peritonitis, making it a life-threatening situation.

An urgent surgical consult was sought, and the patient was started on parenteral antibiotics and was then taken up for emergency surgery. Intraoperative findings were suggestive of an appendicular mass with extensive local extensions. Hence a radical right-sided hemicolectomy was performed, and the patient was shifted to intensive care.

The histopathology reports revealed it to be a locally advanced cancer of the appendix. A multi-disciplinary tumour board opinion was sought, and in view of the advanced nature of the disease, she was started on chemotherapy. She received six cycles of chemotherapy and responded to the treatment very well. Her latest PET-CT scan also shows a significant clinical response.

It’s been about 22 months, and the patient is in remission. Her general condition is good, and she continues to maintain an active social life and does all household chores.
