First TAVR Carried Out in the Region on a 79-Year-Old at Max Bathinda

in Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda

Nov 24 , 2022

Offering the latest in-patient care, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, carried out the Malwa region’s first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure on a 79-year-old cardiac patient.

This is a procedure usually conducted on an elderly patient who cannot tolerate open surgery or complex cardiac procedures for valve repairs. TAVR is a less invasive procedure than open-heart surgery that involves inserting a catheter into small incisions in the large artery of your leg called the femoral artery to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open.

The 79-year-old patient of hypertension was brought to the hospital in an emergency. An Echocardiogram (ECG) showed severe narrowing of the aortic valve (Aortic stenosis). On further evaluation, the patient was found to be unfit for open surgery owing to age-related complications. He had earlier undergone open-heart surgery for a valve repair.
This latest procedure was carried out under light sedation, where no anaesthesia was administered. The patient recovered well post-operatively and was discharged the very next day.

Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Rohit Mody, Director - Cardiology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, said, “We recently treated an elderly patient of severe aortic stenosis with a transcatheter method called TAVR (Transcutaneous Aortic Valve Replacement) by the femoral route. The patient had earlier undergone valve replacement as major surgery. With this method, we can treat patients with aortic valve defects by catheter without surgery which is a much safer option compared to open surgery and proves as a boon for high-risk patients. This procedure is the first being conducted in the Malwa region.”

Max Hospital, Bathinda, continues to pioneer patient care services in the region with state-of-the-art technology and high-quality procedures by very senior clinicians.
