Robotic-assisted Buccal Mucosal Graft Onlay Ureteroplasty

in Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj

Jan 05 , 2023

A 32-year-old male was suering from urinary stones and underwent four surgeries in the last three months at other hospitals to remove the upper ureteric stone (which is not uncommon), but it was unsuccessful. His surgeries led to ureteric injury leading to stricture – a condition that narrows the tube that carries urine, making a person unable to pass urine properly. It was a 6 cm long strictured segment in the right upper ureter. After studying the case deeply, it was decided to do a Robotic-assisted Buccal Mucosal Graft Onlay Ureteroplasty, a procedure to repair the damaged ureter with a buccal mucosa graft. During the procedure, the ureteric stone was also removed. This type of buccal mucosal graft is very commonly used in uretheral structure but for ureteric strictures, it is rarely used.

The total time taken was 3.5 hours, and blood loss was NIL. The patient did not need any ICU stay and was discharged 5 days post-surgery and is doing well.
