A 39-year-old female presented to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, with a complaint of pain in the abdomen. The patient had a caesarean section and appendectomy in the past. Ultrasound was suggestive of an 8.3 x 5.7 x 5.4 cm subserosal fibroid on the anterior wall. A diagnosis of Fibroid Uterus was made.
After the initial workup and pre-anaesthetic workup, the patient was posted for Laparoscopic Myomectomy. On laparoscopy, a large 8 x 6 cm subserosal fundal fibroid was present and another 4 x 5 cm fibroid was present on the right corneal end. The whole procedure was done using a total of four 5-10 mm ports.
The patient was followed with ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) in the post-operative period with early ambulation and early feeding. The patient was discharged the next day in satisfactory condition.
Fibroids are the most common benign tumours, occurring in the female genital tract. Although uterine fibroids usually aren't dangerous, they can cause discomfort and may lead to complications such as drop in red blood cells (anaemia), which causes fatigue from heavy blood loss. In such cases, transfusion is rarely needed due to blood loss.
For fibroids, the surgery could be an open surgery or by Laparoscopy. Laparoscopy offers the benefit of early recovery, decreased pain and decreased chances of wound infection. Although researchers continue to study the causes of fibroid tumours, little scientific evidence is available on how to prevent them. Preventing uterine fibroids may not be possible, but only a small percentage of these tumours require treatment.
By making healthy lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a healthy weight and eating fruits and vegetables, you may be able to decrease your fibroid risk.
Also, some research suggests that using hormonal contraceptives may be associated with a lower risk of fibroids.
