A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea). Cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve by sending signals to it. These signals are in turn sent from the nerve to the brain where they are finally recognized as sound. Children who suffer from congenital/postnatal loss of hearing can undergo a simple and painless surgical procedure for placing a cochlear implant so that they can regain their hearing and speech abilities
