Sweet potato dipped in masala and lemon from a roadside stall or chewy rice ball with spicy sauce — the adventurous food in Delhi is one of the things everyone looks forward to on a street platter. But Beware! Consuming too much of junk food can cause acute gastroenteritis. However, conclusive research has shown that a few simple measures may help you prevent from getting sick and bad health.
Indulging too much into drinking alcohol, not exercising, less consumption of fruits and vegetables can decrease your age by 12 years. Fortunately, we can get them corrected by adopting few healthy habits.
Few of the following habits can make you feel less prone to illnesses:
- Increase your Physical activity
Exercising and physical activity are not only meant for spending time outside but also a chance for you to explore outdoors, be more social, have a small like-minded gathering. Begin your walk with a warm session and pace yourself gradually according to your age and fitness level. Thereafter, increase your time and intensity to be more comfortable. Little activities can also help in keeping your weight intact and being more physically active.
- Wash hands thoroughly
Make sure that you wash your and your kid’s hands before and after eating food. In addition to these, wash your hands after handling uncooked meat, using the toilet, changing diapers, sneezing, coughing and blowing your nose. After putting soap on your hands, rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds.
Use a hand sanitiser when water is not available. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser (one that contains at least 60 per cent alcohol). Apply a hand sanitiser; make sure to completely clean front and back sides of both the hands.
- Prevent diarrhea
Serve food right away after cooking or refrigerate it after it has been cooked or reheated. Leaving food out at room temperature can encourage growth of bacteria. Use refrigerator to thaw frozen item or try putting plastic wrapped frozen items in a bowl of cold water to thaw.
Diarrhea commonly affects people due to improper sanitation. Contaminated food and water are also a few prime reasons. To reduce the risk, watch what you eat! Eat hot and well-cooked food. Avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless you can peel them yourself. Also avoid raw or under-cooked meat and dairy products.
- Watch what you drink!
It is advisable to drink bottled water and beverages to avoid severe stomach infections. Moreover, it is observed that drinking a glass of water before every meal so that it will already make you feel full and you won’t be tempted to eat more. Drinking tea and coffee are safe though consuming too much can aggravate dehydration and diarrhea.
- Eat fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are nutritional powerhouses filled with vitamins and fiber and can lower your risk of heart disease and breast cancer significantly. The circulation boosting and inflammation fighting antioxidants in fruits and veggies can reduce wrinkles. However, consuming less than three servings can severely affect your health.
