Endovascular Coiling and Multidisciplinary Care achieved an Excellent Outcome

in Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket

Apr 18 , 2023

An eighty-year-old lady came to the emergency of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, in an unconscious state. On evaluation, she was found to have a high-grade subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a ruptured basilar artery aneurysm. Her family was updated about the same. They were extensively counselled and made clear that survival in such cases at her age is only about 20-30%, despite the best treatment.

As a first step, endovascular coiling of her aneurysm was done through the right radial artery without requiring open-head surgery. She subsequently underwent an external ventricular drain. Further management was continued in the neurosurgical ICU. She gradually made a good recovery.

On discharge, she had full GCS and was able to eat and walk with support.

Multidisciplinary care, with the eort of the entire team and the complete faith of the family in the management, led to excellent outcome in a seemingly dicult case, which had high morbidity and mortality risk.
