Loose motion (diarrhoea) is the frequent passing of watery stools. Loose motions are common and can occur once or twice a year if proper care is not taken. There are many things that you should know about loose motions; listed below are the top three of them.

The best defence is a good offence

Rather than waiting for loose motions to strike, why not prevent it all together? If you follow a few precautions, you can significantly reduce the chances of contracting this irritating and uncomfortable illness. Be wary of food that you eat outdoors. If you eat outdoors often try to avoid uncooked or cold foods; eat hot and freshly cooked dishes. By washing your hands frequently and properly, you can prevent the germs that cause loose motions from entering your body.

You can save yourself the discomfort by following certain precautions. If you do contract loose motions, make sure you follow a bland diet, consume plenty of liquids, and give your body plenty of rest to heal naturally. Do remember: if your loose motions don’t clear up after 2 days or more, you feel extremely weak or there is a reduction in urine output you should consult your doctor immediately for advice on treatment and medication.

Loose motions can cause acute dehydration

When you have loose motions, your frequent trips to the bathroom deplete your body of essential fluids such as sodium and other vital minerals. In most cases of loose motions, the subsequent dehydration harms your body more than anything else. Therefore, it is important to rehydrate your body by consuming plenty of liquids. In addition to water, there are many fruit juices, such as watermelon and orange and the simplest being “shikanji”, that can help your body to regain lost electrolytes. 

You don’t need to self-medicate .....

In most cases, your loose motions should clear up by themselves. The average length of about of loose motions is 1 to 2 days. During this time, you can gradually reduce the intensity of your loose motions by following a careful diet and avoiding trigger foods. There’s also no real need for strong medication during this initial phase; the best you can do for your body is to allow it to heal naturally, just take plenty of fluids and eat home food. However, if after two days your loose motions have not ceased, you should consult your doctor.
