Frequently Asked Questions

Cervical cancer is a cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix. Not all HPV infections cause cancer, but long-lasting infections with high-risk HPV strains can increase the risk of developing cervical cancer.

In its early stages, cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as it progresses, you might experience:

  • Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding.
  • Pain during sex or pelvic pain unrelated to menstruation.
  • Unusual, foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Pain During Urination.
Women who are sexually active are at risk for cervical cancer, as well as those with weakened immune systems, smoking, and multiple childbirth.
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of procedures, including a Pap test, HPV test, and a colposcopy. If cancer is suspected, a biopsy is performed to confirm the diagnosis.
Cervical cancer is staged based on the size and extent of the tumour, as well as whether it has spread to other parts of the body.
Surgery for cervical cancer may involve removing the cancerous tissue(cone biopsy) or the entire uterus, cervix, and surrounding tissues (type three radical hysterectomy with lymph nodes).
The five-year survival rate for women with localised cervical cancer is 92%.
The recovery process will depend on the type of treatment received. Women may experience side effects such as fatigue, nausea, and pain, bilateral swelling in the legs, difficulty in passing urine.
The type of treatment received will determine whether fertility is affected. Women who have surgery to remove the uterus and cervix will no longer be able to have children.
Cervical cancer can come back after treatment, which is why regular follow-up appointments are important.
Pap tests, HPV tests, practising safe sex, and getting vaccinated against HPV can help prevent cervical cancer.
Women should start getting Pap tests at age 21 and continue getting them every three years until age 29. After age 30, women can get Pap tests every five years if combined with an HPV test.
