Did you know that kidney ailments impact children as well and the related symptoms can go unnoticed until the advanced stage? Signs of kidney diseases are subtle in children, but if these are identified at an early stage, with appropriate treatment the diseases can be managed well and children can learn to lead quality life in the long run.

Yatharth (name changed due to confidential reasons) a 13-year-old boy had been bed-wetting which was ignored by his family for a long time considering that his habit will go someday. Later, he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease. His family was unprepared for such an event and since the disease was detected in the last stage, the boy could not recover.

Counseling of parents and children is also an essential and integral part of comprehensive care, especially positive reinforcement and motivation.

Advancements in research have brought early diagnostic tests, child-friendly drug formulation, Child-friendly dialysis equipment, and renal transplant surgeries to the doorstep. With the expansion in the field of kidney diseases in children (Pediatric Nephrology) more and more children can be benefited and precious lives can be saved and enriched.

If your child has any of these symptoms, you should immediately consult a Pediatrician/Pediatric Nephrologist

  • Swelling over the body, especially puffy eyes
  • Blood in urine
  • Bedwetting even after 5 years
  • Not growing in height/ Short stature
  • Bowed legs/ Rickets/ Bone pain
  • Anaemia
  • Persistent headache or hypertension
  • Recurrent urine infections/ poor urinary stream
  • Renal stones

Last but not the least, dehydration can cause acute kidney shutdown if not managed timely. Dehydration is mostly associated with acute diarrheal illness in children and with a timely institution of ORS and sometimes intravenous fluids, Kidney shutdown can be prevented.

Let us take a step towards spreading awareness about kidney diseases in children. We should pledge that we will not deprive these children from of the care they need and deserve   Let these kids live well with their kidney disease and blossom to become the inspiration for the future.
